I realized that our problem of open space with this membrane direction isnt an architectural one but a conceptual one (much easier to solve!). In fact its something that we've already been doing and is one of the main drivers of the membrane idea but I somehow forgot about when thinking about open space: that the museum should be more extroverted and more communicative with the city. So its consistent to place the open spaces on the exterior where they can become a part of the surroundings - towards the new city, towards the old city, and towards the river - as long as we are conscious about making those locations viable event/gathering spaces.

my issue with open space wasn't the fact that it wasn't introverted/ enclosed, but the risk that it becomes too divided and particular. I think the challenge will be to include the open space in the membrane, so that it doesn't read as leftover space but an equal part with any other program.
thanks for the docs!
